A fabulous vintage unsigned Weiss sapphire blue aurora borealis leaf design brooch.  It’s hard to show in the photographs just how stunning the blue is – think of a blue lagoon with aqua tones.  Each large marquise cut rhinestone is surrounded by smaller round aurora borealis crystals.  It looks amazing whenever it catches the light.  The brooch is rhodium plated and is still nice and shiny on the reverse.  It fastens with a rollover safety catch.  Some of the photos are taken with flash and some without.

Now for the downside – one of the little claws holding a marquise cut stone in place has broken off (please see final photo).  This isn’t noticeable unless scrutinising and the stone is secure.  Also, one of the smaller rhinestones is missing – this is right underneath and is very difficult to spot, unless scrutinising with a jeweller’s loupe.  There are some initials lightly scratched onto the reverse – where the brooch would have been taken to a jewellers in the distant past, most likely to have a stone replaced.  These imperfections don’t in my opinion detract from its immense charm, but it has been priced accordingly.  However, you may not want to gift it for this reason.

Albert Weiss trained at Coro.  He discovered that he had a flair for jewellery design there and a great eye for detail.  In 1942 he left Coro and set up his own business, opening a shop on Fifth Avenue.  All of his high end costume jewellery was handcrafted, using only the finest Swarovski crystals.  The brand became very popular and the business flourished throughout the 1950’s and 60’s.  Unfortunately this was relatively short lived, as Albert retired in 1969 and handed the business over to his son.  With his son at the helm, the business ran into financial difficulty and sadly closed in 1971.  Weiss is now highly collectable and prices are constantly increasing.
